How to Choose the Perfect Rug Size for your Bedroom

Bedroom Rug Size Guide

Adding a beautiful area rug helps to pull your bedroom look together by providing color, pattern, and personality. If you have a hard flooring like wood, marble, or tile floors, a rug enhances the room's coziness, warmth, texture, and softness instantly.

Selecting the right size rug under your bed depends on the size of your room and furniture arrangement. What size bed, nightstands, or bench do you have.

General guidelines for proper placement of the bedroom area rugs:

  • A rectangular rug should be placed horizontally under the bed so there is enough space on the sides of the bed to land with your feet comfortably.
  • The rug extends at least 18 inches (2'-3' is preferred) from the sides and bottom of the bed for your landing pad when getting out of the bed.
  • Leave approximately 8-12 inches of space between the nightstands and the beginning of the rug.
  • With a bench, at least 12 inches from the edge of the bench to the edge of the rug.
  • Leave a minimum of  8-12 inches of breathing room between the walls and the edge of the rug. It also helps to create a border around the rug.

RUG SIZES FOR CALIFORNIA KING SIZE BEDS (72" x 84")

Rug Size: 8 ft x 10 ft

  • With the California king-size beds, it takes up a lot of room space. An 8 ft x 10 ft rug will work just fine with enough space to step on comfortably around the bed. This rug size works best for a smaller master bedroom.

Rug Size: 9 ft x 12 ft

  • If you have an ottoman or stool at the foot of the bed, an 9 ft x 12 ft rug will work best with enough space at the end to place the additional seat. This rug size is a great option for a larger master bedroom.

RUG SIZES FOR KING SIZE BEDS (76" x 80")

Rug Size: 8 ft x 10 ft

  • A king-size bed is 4 inches wider in the width and 4 inches shorter in the length than a California king-size bed.
  •  An 8 ft x 10 ft rug will work under a king-size bed. This rug size is recommended for a smaller master bedroom as the rug doesn't cover too much space.

Rug Size: 9 ft x 12 ft

  • A 9 ft x 12 ft rug will fit perfectly in proportion to the king-size bed if you've got a larger-sized room. Leave a minimum of 2 feet of the soft rug underfoot around the bed. This rug size works best for a larger master bedroom.

RUG SIZES FOR QUEEN SIZE BEDS (60" x 80")

      Rug Size: 6 ft x 9 ft

      • For queen size bed, a 6 ft x 9 ft rug will leave a minimum of 18 inches border on each side of the bed, but less than 12 inches at the foot of the bed. This rug size is a good alternative for a smaller master bedroom.

      RUG SIZE: 8 FT x 10 FT

        • An 8 ft x 10 ft rug will leave 2 feet of the rug on both sides of the bed, there is plenty of space at the foot of the bed for placing a bench seat. This rug size fits perfectly in proportion to the queen size bed.

Keep in mind these are general guidelines. To test standard rug sizes, tape out the dimensions your're considering by using the painter's tape.
